Applied Math and Statistics Colloquium: Shape Selection Induced by Competition Between Surface and Line Energy
October 13 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join us as Dr. Eliot Fried speaks on Shape Selection Induced by Competition Between Surface and Line Energy. We will be in CH 143 starting at 3 p.m. Come early for cookies.
We will consider a variational problem that consists of finding energetically preferred equilibrium configurations of a system in which a closed, flexible loop is spanned by a soap film. While the loop is modeled by an inextensible, unshearable rod endowed with elastic resistance to bending, the soap film is modeled as a surface endowed with uniform tension.
Dr. Eliot Fried is a professor at the Mathematical Soft Matter Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.
