Colorado is unique in that it is a leader in several different types of energy development, from renewables like wind and solar, to traditional forms like crude oil and natural gas. This has taken place in the context of rapidly changing state and federal regulatory regimes which reflect a political divide as to how to best reconcile environmental concerns with energy needs. Colorado’s approach to energy development shows how a balance can be struck between these competing interests, and serves as a model for other states around the country.

Andy Spielman is a shareholder at the law firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber & Shreck who practices in the areas of energy and natural resources and public lands. Andy started his career at the US Environmental Protection Agency and has Chaired the Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission and the Regional Air Quality Council. Previously, Andy served as Director of the Future of Oil & Gas Initiative at the Payne School and as Global Chair of the energy and natural resource practices at two international law firms.
