This presentation will review the basics of energy efficiency as an energy resource—describing key energy efficiency measures, the cost of saving energy through efficiency improvements, and the environmental benefits provided by energy efficiency improvements. It will also present the key policies and programs used to advance energy efficiency in the U.S. and provide examples from Colorado. Finally, it will discuss the overall contribution that energy efficiency is already making and could make in the future to our national energy resource mix.

Howard Geller is the Executive Director of the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP), a public interest venture he founded in 2001. He also leads SWEEP’s work on utility policy and programs. As a result of SWEEP’s efforts, energy efficiency initiatives have greatly expanded in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. Dr. Geller is the former Executive Director of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) and author or co-author of four books.
