Hennebach Lecture: Music, Word, Soul
April 30, 2018 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pmFree
The Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Division at Mines presents Rafi Zabor’s lecture, “Music, Word, Soul.”
Rafi Zabor presents an inquiry into the different modes of experience evoked by music and literature, the possibilities of translation between the two and into the nature of the human soul, whether we call it by that name, by another or dismiss its existence entirely. Who are we and what do music and language mean to us and why? Musical examples from Bach, Coltrane, Beethoven and others should shine a light on the subject, and the author will read from his own works, the PEN/Faulkner Award-winning novel The Bear Comes Home, and the memoir I, Wabenzi. If that doesn’t work he might try a bit of Proust or Shakespeare.
Writers, musicians, listeners, readers and many other types of bipedal breathers of oxygen are welcome to attend. Zabor also knows the name of the person who actually came up with “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.” And he will tell you, if you’re there.
