Energy and politics have always been intertwined. Today, they are increasing complex, as we see in the energy transition in the US and other global regions, the pipeline politics of Russia, and the politics of solar in China. The Handbook’s 31 chapters cover all the major world regions and the key countries in energy politics.

Dr. Hancock is a specialist in the intersection of politics and energy.  Her research has focused on Russia and Eurasia, sub-Saharan Africa, and most recently the United States. Her research started with a focus on oil and gas pipeline politics.  She now focuses on the energy transition and the politics and policy of renewable energy and is the co-editor and author of three chapters in the Handbook.

Dr. Parinandi is a specialist in American politics and public policy, predominantly focused on energy and economic issues. His research looks at the diffusion, or spread, of policy across the states and how that diffusion is accelerated or hindered by various factors. He is conducting a large scale study on how regulation influences firm-level compliance with renewable energy laws, and he is the co-author of one chapter in the Handbook.

Dr. Jonas Nahm is a political scientist whose research examines the intersection of climate policy, environmental politics, and economic and industrial policy. His book, “Collaborative Advantage: Forging Green Industries in the New Global Economy” (Oxford University Press, 2021), uses the development of renewable energy sectors to investigate the political economy of innovation and industrial development in global clean tech sectors. Prior to coming to Johns Hopkins SAIS, Jonas was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University. He holds a PhD in Political Science from MIT and speaks German and Mandarin Chinese.”
