VIIRS Nightfire is used to locate and to measure size and temperature of gas flares observed at night by Suomi NPP and JPSS-1 satellites. Over a decade of the continuous monitoring it is possible to estimate an instant and the accumulated flared volume by site, oil field or country. Temporal variations in flaring viewed from space correlate with changes on the market and in the natural gas utilization strategy.

Mikhail Zhizhin has received M.Sci. in Mathematics from Moscow State University and Ph.D. in Geophysics from Russian Academy of Sciences. He has 35 years of research in machine learning, data mining and HPC applied to geodynamics, climate, space weather, and remote sensing. He works in the Earth Observation Group on the analysis of the nighttime light and heat sources such as gas flares, forest fires, fishing boats and city lights.
