#MeTooSTEM Seminar & Discussion – Jane Willenbring
February 28 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 amFree
Professor Jane Willenbring will discuss her experiences with the #MeToo movement in which her recent high-profile Title IX case played a role. Her talk will be followed by an open discussion period primarily for faculty and administrators, though all are welcome to attend. Coffee and donuts will be served.
Dr. Jane Willenbring is an Associate Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. Jane is credited with bringing national attention to the #MeToo movement in academia with a 2016 Title IX complaint against her graduate school adviser, prominent Antarctic researcher David Marchant. Her case received national media attention and led to an investigation by the US House of Representatives, the renaming of an Antarctic glacier previously named after Marchant, policy updates by the National Science Foundation, National Academy of Sciences, American Geophysical Union and Geological Society of America, and, finally, Marchant’s termination from Brown University in 2019. Jane is a leading researcher in geomorphology and surface processes, Director of the Scripps Cosmogenic Isotope Laboratory, and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. She has been awarded the UC San Diego Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity Award, an NSF CAREER Award, and an Antarctica Service Medal.
