“Connecting the World @ Scale”

Presented by Martijn de Jongh & Sedar Sahin from Facebook

Martijn de Jongh and Sedar Sahin from Facebook will introduce their key data storage framework and their main data query engines that they use for data processing and analysis. They will also highlight some of the recent work done to support Facebook’s efforts to improve internet connectivity in the world and how it has leveraged some of its data to help aid organizations be more effective when disasters such as floods, fires, and hurricanes strike.

Martijn de Jongh is a Manager of Infrastructure Data Science Group at Facebook. Martijn has been working on projects involving connectivity efforts supported by geospatial data and analysis since 2014. He completed his PhD studies at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences where he specialized in Graphical Probabilistic Models, Uncertainty in AI and Data Mining.

Sedar Sahin is a Data Analyst of Infrastructure Data Science Group at Facebook. Sedar joined FB in March 2017 and been part of connectivity projects providing insights using geospatial data. Prior joining to FB, he worked as a Geoscientist and Remote Sensing Engineer at Turkish Petroleum. He holds a MS degree from MIT in Earth Sciences.
