PE Distinguished Seminar Series: Directional Drilling Approach – Bridging the class room learning with field operations
October 5, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Vakkeyil Naveen Nair
Halliburton Drilling Design & Deliver Manager for North America, Land Operation
Directional Drilling is required for most field development drilling programs in North America for optimum well placement to maximize reservoir drainage. The drilling challenges are unique to each application so a thorough planning approach is required to understand the objectives and constraints in order to develop effective drilling solutions. The seminar will discuss the planning process to design & drill wells to deliver maximum asset value and discuss the different measurements of value. In addition, some key technology drivers for North America Land will also be presented on drive systems in bottom hole assembles like Positive Displacement Motors & Rotary Steerable Tools. Current conditions in the US Land market call for developing the most effective solutions that deliver the highest possible value. This requires not only identifying key technologies to drill to target but also reducing non‐productive time to avoid trips due to downhole tool failures. However, large percentage of downhole tool failures relates to high‐energy downhole vibration events. It is critical to identify the vibration mechanism while drilling from downhole vibration data and implement effective mitigation procedures in real time to prevent down‐hole tool failures. The seminar will help understand the key vibration mechanisms and damages observed as a result. The creation of drilling optimization road maps and key drilling practices will not only allow drilling to the limit with the best drilling parameters to maximize drilling performance but will reduce risks of well control related incidents and reduce non‐productive time. Finally, the presentation will cover certain aspects of Hydraulics management to consider during the planning and execution of challenging wells, which especially is one of the key areas of study to deliver extended reach wells.
