Challenges of New Technology Development and Deployment in the Oil & Gas Industry, an overview of a new technology development: Next Generation Mobility and Sweep Improvement with Excelceor Technology
The oil and gas industry is often characterized as being too conservative, risk-adverse and slow to adopt new technology. Commercializing technology in the oil and gas market is costly and time intensive; with an average of 16 years from concept to widespread commercial adoption. Major oil and gas companies have decreased their research and development (R&D) spending, driven in large part by a decision to “buy versus build” new technology, while service and startup companies have stepped in to partially fill the void by increasing their R&D spending and focusing on providng innovative products. This presentation is an example of efforts by a service company to offer a new technology and describes a successful program of laboratory, pilot-scale and inter-well field pilot studies qualifying a new shear-resistant, high-injectivity, reservoir-triggered latex polymer for offshore mobility control applications.
Dr. Mehdi Salehi is a Project Manager with Surtek, a consulting firm providing independent engineering, laboratory, and operational expertise for companies interested in Enhanced Oil Recovery since 1978. For more than 15 years, Dr. Salehi has been conducting research on chemical EOR processes, field development, and deployment of these technologies. He received his B.Sc. degree from Petroleum University of Technology in Iran and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Kansas, all in Petroleum Engineering.
