“The Responsible Conduct of Science – Is Conflict of Interest an Issue?”
Abstract: Management of Financial Conflict of Interest has been the subject of much debate and regulation leading to a significant level of burden and bureaucracy for academic institutions. Has this regulatory approach promoted ethical professional conduct or has it missed the point? There are many other more corrosive conflicts of interest in an academic institution that are accepted and rarely managed. I will summarize the issues, raise questions and challenges that the scientific community are struggling to address because the answers are not clear in the current academic structure.
BIOGRAPHY: I have been in various regulatory compliance roles at the University of Colorado Denver / Anschutz Medical Campus since 2001, and in my current role, as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Regulatory Compliance, I have overall responsibility for the day to day functioning of our research portfolio and serve as the Research Integrity Officer for both the downtown and health science campus. Our research award funding totals around $450 million and we manage about 3500 human subject protocols across a broad range of biomedical and social behavioral specialties. I also oversee the numerous translational science projects in our various research laboratories. My academic background is in nursing and law and I obtained my doctorate from King’s College, London in international law, health policy and human rights.
