Physics colloquium-“It’s Not Just Allowed, It’s Superallowed!”

Abstract: The atomic nucleus is a quantum mechanical object that aims at reaching its minimum energy state through various possible types of transitions mediated by fundamental forces of nature. One of the most common type of these radioactive transition, the beta decay, is governed by the weak interaction, one of three interactions included in the Standard Model of particle physics. In my talk I will show how the study of a special class of beta decays, called superallowed, can be used to test the Standard Model. I will present recent experimental results as well as future experiments to study superallowed transition at the University of Notre Dame Nuclear Science Laboratory.
