Challenges in Returning Samples from Cold Solar System Environments
Abstract: The Astromaterials Curation Office at the Johnson Space Center is the nation’s repository for extraterrestrial samples, including the Apollo Moon rocks, meteorites, and many others. This talk will introduce NASA’s current astromaterials collections and our ongoing advanced curation activities, which are preparing us for new types of sample return missions. In particular, this talk will focus on Cold Curation, which is preparing us for the unique storage and handling requirements of cold, volatile-rich, and temperature-sensitive samples. Cold curation is particularly relevant to both Artemis lunar sample return and cometary sample return missions. The unique requirements of cold samples involve science, curation, engineering, and project management for mission success. This talk will touch on all of those components, showing how NASA’s sample return missions require a team effort from many different disciplines.
