Machine learning as a discipline has grown from the use of simple neural networks to complicated multilayered approaches in recent years with recent enhancements in computing power and, in particular, with the advent of graphical processing units as a primary computational machine. While much of the underlying code has been around for decades, hardware improvements and innovative algorithms have enabled significant advances in the discipline. Many exploration and production companies are busy exploring how they can leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve their business. While much of the focus to date has been in areas where data are readily available, such as on production data coming from producing wells to, for example, anticipate when pumps will need maintenance before catastrophic failure occurs, relatively little effort has been expended on the applications to exploration. I will present here some case studies of where machine learning can be applied to exploration problems, the approaches being taken and fertile areas of future research.
