Abstract: Earthquakes, landslides, and geomagnetic storms can cause damages and losses to life and property. The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Geologic Hazards Science Center (GHSC) is to mitigate losses from those hazardous geologic events through a combination of fundamental research, monitoring, and hazard assessments. The Geologic Hazards Science Center is located in Golden, Colorado, on the Colorado School of Mines campus, with an auxiliary campus in Albuquerque, NM. The facility is home to >240 researchers, operational staff, student interns, volunteers, and contractors who support research and operations focused on earthquakes, landslides, and earth’s geomagnetic field. This presentation will describe the portfolio of work at the GHSC, with an emphasis on the National Earthquake Information Center’s 24×7 global earthquake monitoring mission. The National Earthquake Information Center rapidly determines the location and size of all destructive earthquakes worldwide and delivers a range of near realtime products that include earthquake source characteristics, ground shaking, and earthquake impact.
