Please join the Mines Integrated CCUS Initiative and the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines as we welcome Dr. Jennifer Wilcox, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Fossil Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, presenting a webinar titled The Role of Carbon Capture in Helping to Meet Climate Goals on Monday, March 22, 2021 at 8:00am (MT).
There is unprecedented interest and momentum in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), carbon management, negative emissions and deep decarbonization worldwide. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine have identified carbon sequestration as one of society’s grand challenges, and multiple national labs and the U.S. Department of Energy have significant ongoing work in the area. Most recently the 116th Congress affirmed the importance of these technologies by authorizing more than $6 billion of CCUS-related spending over 5 years in the Energy Act of 2020.
The Colorado School of Mines is one of the world’s top technical research universities in areas related to energy, natural resources and the environment, and is actively engaged in multiple aspects of the CCUS chain with more than 40 faculty members of the Integrated CCUS Initiative (ICI). The ICI and the Global Energy Future Initiative is excited to highlight this research amid the accelerating pace of activity in the CCUS space and is proud to announce that March is CCUS Month at Mines! Join us for CCUS-related content including webinars, podcast interviews with Colorado businesses doing CCUS, and a showcase of Mines research.
Jennifer Wilcox, the PDAS in the Office of Fossil Energy at DOE, was the Presidential Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. As a senior fellow at the World Resources Institute, she led WRI’s Carbon Removal Program.
Having grown up in rural Maine, Wilcox has a profound respect and appreciation of nature. That appreciation permeates her work; she focuses on minimizing the negative impacts of humankind on our natural environment. Wilcox holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and an M.A. in Chemistry from the University of Arizona and B.A. in Mathematics from Wellesley College.
Wilcox’s research takes aim at the nexus of energy and the environment, developing both mitigation and adaptation strategies to minimize negative climate impacts associated with society’s dependence on fossil fuels. She has served on committees of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Physical Society to assess carbon capture methods and impacts on climate. She is the author of the first textbook on carbon capture, Carbon Capture, published in March 2012. She co-edited the CDR Primer on carbon dioxide removal in 2021.
